The Challenge

The objective was to transform an underutilized, non-conditioned garage space - previously relegated to basic storage - into a fully integrated, habitable living area capable of supporting a growing family. Executing this conversion properly required addressing significant structural and architectural disparities between the raw garage footprint and the main residence. Key hurdles included mitigating an uneven floor elevation, closing the structural void left by the existing garage door, and establishing seamless utility connectivity from the main house.

The Strategy

W|B formulated a comprehensive architectural and engineering strategy to deliver a seamless, code-compliant garage conversion. The approach focused on two distinct priorities: structural remediation to ensure the room felt like a natural extension of the home, and advanced mechanical infrastructure planning. By designing critical system extensions and prioritizing high-end exterior integration, the strategy ensured the new room would fully blend into the existing residential architecture rather than appearing as an afterthought.

The Design & Execution

The scope of work encompasses a complete multidisciplinary design and infrastructural overhaul:

• Structural Integration: Engineering a raised floor system to match the interior home level and executing a structural masonry infill of the former garage door opening.

• MEP Extension: Designing the extension of core electrical circuits and plumbing lines from the main household infrastructure into the new living space.

• Mechanical Upgrades: Specifying and integrating a high-efficiency water heater equipped with an advanced water filtration system.

• Exterior Architectural Alignment: Designing exterior façade enhancements, matching materials, window placement, and finishes to make the conversion indistinguishable from the original home design.

The Result

The resulting design successfully reimagines the underutilized storage space as a premium, fully permitted bedroom that organically expands the home's livable footprint. By balancing interior structural leveling with meticulous exterior styling, the conversion provides the growing family with high-utility living space while enhancing the property's overall architectural continuity and market value.
